Happy Father's Day

A father’s voice is one of the first sounds a child hears.  In my life it was the voice of love, the voice of reason, and the sound I now long to hear. My dad was the one who pulled me back when I got out of line or at the very least sent me to my room. (Throwing every sock I owned at the wall was a favorite tactic of mine) Once I resurrected my attitude I was always welcomed back into the fold. On occasion, when I really stepped out of line, my dad would pinch a small amount of skin from the back of my arm, and guide me in a more positive direction. It is interesting to think he was just a kid himself, trying to figure it all out on his own. I think the most attractive aspect of a man, especially a father, is the ability to resist getting pulled down by the derogatory behavior of others. If my dad was anything, he was exceptionally resilient. He owned a small retread company in Washington. I watched him survive a nasty recession, with dignity, and determination. You can't tell your kids a thing, all you can do is live your best life, and hope this is enough to give them a good launch. The older I get the more respect I have for the men who honor this vocation.

I watched my husband adapt to the overwhelming needs of young children, I watched him council our brood through the crazy teens, and as a mature man guide them into adulthood. He certainly had his share of missteps, but he has never wavered in his loyalty to this family, and most profoundly to his children. They are the jewels in his life. (I’m sure I’m the sparkle) Fatherhood is an enormous responsibility, and it hasn't gone unnoticed to me, how my husband constantly labors for this family. They say the most interesting people you will ever meet are your children.  I couldn’t agree more.  When parenting is done well, you not only bless your family, but you gift the world with competent individuals. So don't be afraid to give them a pinch and send them in the right direction once in a while. Happy Father's Day to all the great dads, especially my dad in heaven, my father-in-law, my son-in-law, and my husband. Now go out and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
